This single storey extension provides a new kitchen, dining room and laundry at the rear of a double storey terrace house in Clifton Hill.
The project works within the familiar typology of the backyard extension, in this instance replacing an existing lean-to with a new one. The new roof is lifted to face northwards, providing dramatic interior space and inviting the winter sun. The roof twists downwards to arrive at the southern boundary, protecting the southern neighbour's solar access.
The new kitchen and dining area opens up the existing living room and allows a flow westward from these spaces into the backyard. A deep reveal to the western façade intervenes between inside and outside to protect from wind and sun. The back yard is landscaped to facilitate outdoor living while at the same time allowing off street parking.
The pattern, colour and texture of the exterior draw upon the position of the project within its local laneway world: a mix of polychrome metals competing with faded timber palings.
